Australian Investment Council welcomes emphasis on growth and productivity in ASIC and APRA Statement of Expectations

16 July, 2026 - The Australian Investment Council welcomes today's new Statement of Expectations for ASIC and APRA, and ASIC’s Statement of Intent, which place a greater emphasis on economic growth, productivity, and business dynamism.

For the past 18 months, the Council has consistently highlighted that a clear and current Statement of Expectations from the Government could support business dynamism by outlining its expectations of regulators to balance risk mitigation with the need for efficiency, growth, and innovation.

The clear expectation that ASIC and APRA support "strong, sustainable economic growth", "adopt a proportionate, risk-based approach” and "balance risk mitigation with the need for efficiency, growth and innovation" is a big step in the right direction and recognition that investing capital is essential to growing our economy.

The Council commends ASIC’s Statement of Intent which places a welcome emphasis on regulatory guidance discipline, expressly committing ASIC to "maintain a regular and transparent review program for regulatory guidance and legislative instruments to ensure they remain necessary, proportionate and aligned with the interests of good consumer, investor and market outcomes."

This is particularly important guidance with the review of RG 97 underway and the work of the Council in developing industry-led standards for private markets.
